Top 5 Popes of All Time - Trad List and Prog List

Post by p.falk »

I couldn't make these lists... I simply am too ignorant.

If Trads could make their top 5 list and Progressives make their top 5 list what would those lists be?

I can imagine Pope Pius X would be close to the top for Trads; while Pope Paul VI would be close to the top for Progs.

Who could complete these lists?

Just something fun.

I note without further comment that Francis would be close to the top of the list for progressives.

And John XXIII, while intentionally failing to understand either Pope

I don't know that progressives would like Paul VI. They never forgave him for Humanae Vitae.

I can't think of who else to put on the prog list--maybe Leo XIII, but I don't think so.

Trad list: Pius X, Pius IX
and Pius XII

It's easy to find out who the top spots would belong to; there are plenty of "progressive" histories of the Popes by authors like Richard McBrien. Find a couple of them and notice which Popes they praise and which they condemn. Richard McBrien's was written in 1997 and contains ridiculous statements like "Since the election of John Paul II, ecclesiastical hardliners, fearful of losing their power and privilege, have been leading a slow-motion coup against the new, progressive direction charted by John XXIII." There are an awful lot of assumptions packed into a statement like that, which tells you a lot about what people with his mindset think.

Maybe not Pius XII, because he began the liturgical reforms.

You could not pay me enough to read McBrien. Someone else will have to do that research.

That's not how Traditionalists read him though
