Dom Hubert van Zeller - "Brother Choleric"

Post by p.falk »

I was in that church basement looking at books in the little library again and saw this little hardcover book with a dustcover that had some pretty impressive, unique illustrations on it.

This is the library where it can be a bit progressive with the book selection. This book was by Dom Hubert van Zeller. Paging through the little book I was further impressed by the illustrations (turns out he did the illustrations himself!). And the writing did not strike me at all as new age meets Catholicism.

Got back home and looked further into him and learn that aside from being a Benedictine and a writer he also wrote and illustrated some funny little comics, all centering around the religious life leading up and after Vatican II.

He would write under the pen name: "Brother Choleric".  I love that. Even his picture looks intimidating... like a Catholic Shel Silverstein.

He even has a quote that struck me something Lewis or Tolkien would say:
What the soul hardly realizes is that, unbeliever or not, his loneliness is really a homesickness for God.

I came across a video that had another good quote:
You tell me that the attraction is there for the silent prayer of waiting upon God, but that when you try it either nothing happens, or you are invaded by distractions. Well, what did you expect? So long as the attraction isn't invaded by doubts and a desire to go back to a more talkative prayer. The thing to do is to follow it and not be discouraged by the fact that nothing seems to happen or that distractions seem to spoil the whole thing. The reason why nothing seems to happen is that God has taken over the control of your prayer and is not letting you see what he is doing. If you were to see His work, you would want to interfere with it. You would think you knew better. So of course he has to work secretly. Look at it from His point of view. His object is two-fold: first to keep you there trying to pray in spite of what is apparently a waste of time, particularly when you are leaving yourself wide open to distractions. Secondarily, to transfer the whole undertaking from the natural to the supernatural. The 2nd purpose could not be achieved you were able to follow the process. So, what God does is to freeze your mind and operate at a level which you cannot appreciated. At the surface level he allows distractions to bother you, but in fact they are only bothering you and are doing you no harm. Distractions are harmful only when they are deliberately followed up.
