Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Tunes from people not on my list for favorite bands or albums.
Nancy Sinatra, These Boots are Made for Walking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDmidrIDB4o
This is a masterpiece. Some of the lyrics are great. You keep saming when you oughta be changing. The horns in verse 2 are weird and dissonant, and then in verse 3 they come together, and then in the outro they blow up. But the bass...it makes the thing.
10,000 Maniacs, These are days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-HLxpWGCzc
I saw them on this tour, in Stowe, VT. Natalie kept singing tunes from The Sound of Music. She is not in fact a great singer live--pitch is a little hit or miss. But I loved this album, and this song.
Old Crow Medicine Show, Wagon Wheel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKMsrGoQ-c8
Need I say more?
Beach Boys, Sloop John B: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLoS8bGr0uo
The acapella section is what puts it over the top.
Bob Dylan, A Hard Rain's a gonna Fall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5al0HmR4to
John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat, Boogie Chillen #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzmogN7aj-I
Legendary harp solo by Alan Wilson from 5:53 to 7:53. He was dead before the album came out.
Patty Loveless, You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n57WBtvtC4
Dailey and Vincent, By the Mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw-uklIlQE0
Probably my favorite current touring band. We've been able to see them 4 times now.
Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, Love Hurts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJAmQq8fTjM
The Petersens, All Glory be to Christ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EexEDzJ6zIY

Ha! Me, too! But what I meant is that they aren't in my list of top tennish favorite bands I posted here awhile back.peregrinator wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 8:34 amI'm confused.gherkin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 11:45 pm Tunes from people not on my list for favorite bands or albums.

ETA: I would not pay good money to go see, for example, GNR. Or, really any rock band. Not my scene. But we do go to shows still, mainly by acoustic performers. In recent years, we've been able to see Ricky Skaggs and Gillian Welch, along with several Dailey and Vincent shows. They're great live. But I don't actually own any of their records.
EATA: Gillian Welch actually wrote By the Mark. Since, AFAIK, she is not a Christian, that makes that song an instance of cultural appropriation, so of course she should be canceled.

Re: Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Speaking of which, Gillian Welch, Look at Miss Ohio. A great Augustinian song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NPEj63d0jY

Re: Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Not an interesting topic at all....a better one would be "best songs not by the original artists" i.e. "Best Covers" and I don't mean "better than the original" although that would certainly count, but just "good covers"
If you don't start that thread soon I will
Two choices immediately spring to mind:
Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"
Metallica's acoustic version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone"

If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

Re: Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Yeah I can't stand the noise of rock any more. And I'm starting to lose my hearing a bit so I'd like to preserve what I have left for as long as possible. We did go to see Frampton on his farewell tour in 2019 (before he decided to do another farewell tour) but I wore earplugs for a good bit of the show. The last concert we went to was Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn.

I'd love to see Bela Fleck. I don't know Washburn.peregrinator wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 2:54 pmYeah I can't stand the noise of rock any more. Hearing is a thing. I haven't needed earplugs at the concerts I've gone to recently, but if I did go to an electrified show I'd bring them. Actually, I went to a Malpass Brothers show in the fall. They do old school country. I should have brought earplugs to that one, but I didn't think of it.

Re: Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Perfect choice. It's such a great, well-crafted song that not even a no-talent Nancy Sinatra could ruin it. I love the lines, too: "You keep lying when you ought to be truthing."gherkin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 11:45 pm Nancy Sinatra, These Boots are Made for Walking

Re: Greatest songs by not the greatest bands
Washburn is otherwise known as Mrs. Béla Fleck - she also plays the banjo but only frailing, not Scruggs-style. So it wasn't with the Flecktones - we did have tickets for a Flecktones show but it got postponed due to lockdowns and eventually cancelled.gherkin wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 3:24 pmI'd love to see Bela Fleck. Anyway the show was at a small venue, very intimate (for a concert). Exactly the sort of thing my wife and I are into these days.

Can't believe I didn't think of ABBA. I don't know which of their songs is my favorite. Maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvChjHcABPA
