How to speak truth of the faith

When we were going through the hard years with my middle son I would sometimes in desperation emphasise that something is a sin or offensive to God. My husband had to sit me down and explain that I was only making him more defiant and contemptful of the Church by using that tack. All is good now after many years but I think I learned that sometimes the best thing to do is just pray for a person unless they're genuinely receptive.
