Will wrote: Mon Dec 04, 2023 6:47 pm Hello all it’s been a while. Thanks for keeping the group alive.
I am reading The Three Musketeers. I do not believe I have read it before. A good fun little read.
That is one of my favorite books, did you know it is the first volume of a trilogy? It is. The second book "20 Years After" reunites the four during the time of Cardinal Mazarin and the English Civil War. I'll say no more. The third volume "The Vicomte de Braggelone" is set 10 years after that. Braggelone is such a long book (longer than the other two volumes combined) that it is often published in three volumes:

The Victomte De Braggelone (the first 93 chapters)
Louise de la Valliere (chapters 91-180)
The Man in the Iron Mask (chapters 181-269)

Some people read The Man in the Iron Mask by itself and are confused by it because Dumas didn't publish a book titled "The Man in the Iron Mask", it isn't a stand-alone book, it is the third part of a long novel, which is itself the concluding chapter of a trilogy.
That is good to know I may read the rest of them. Thanks for the information.

Tim Powers is a lot of fun.
But is he funny?

I just finished An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith by St. John of Damascus who in Catholicism is reckoned as the last of the Church Fathers. Fr. William A. Jurgens in his wonderful three-volume work, The Faith of the Early Fathers, tells about the uncertainty of St. John Damascene's lifespan:
He died before the year 754 A. D., in which year the acts of a synod refer to him as already dead. The usual date given for his death, which marks the close of the Patristic Age in the East, is 749 A. D.; but even that is by no means certain.
An Arabic Menologion says that at his death he was 104 years of age, which would fix his birth at ca 645 A. D. Some, however, think that his age is greatly exaggerated and suggest that he was born ca 675 A. D. or even closer to the end of the seventh century.
Anyway, St. John Damascene remains a very clear expositor of the faith.

About to start reading 'Army of Angels' by Pamela Marcantel (sp) again - I really like that book. The two pages near the end (those who have read it probably know what I'm talking about) are two of the best pages of English prose ever. :-)
