Why so many wildfires in Canada?

For the third time this summer, NY air is at unhealthy levels from smoke blowing down out of Canada. Is this the same situation as California, where liberal policies fuel (pardon the pun) natural disasters?

Lotta reasons, but there are a lot of trees up there.
When we aren't producing our own smoke and haze, we import is from AZ, CA, UT, CO ... and, sometimes, farther.

It seems to be a fairly new phenomena. Wasn't an issue years ago.
