A very good friend of mine told me how he got into some new musical artist. He downloaded some songs of theirs. And later learned that it was all AI. Music made by giving various prompts to some AI music generating program.

I thought he would be disgusted. Like learning that his new romantic fling was actually a fella. That at some profound and intimate level he was deeply betrayed.


But… that wasn’t his reaction. He said that if it’s good music then it’s good music. I had to change the topic because I refuse to believe that someone I respect (who’s a musician himself) would for entertainment and enjoyment listen to something so soulless.

Like if someone was eating the actual equivalent of Soylent Green… found out what it actually was and responded with, “still tastes good to me.”


I will not name call… but who here would have no problem listening to AI generated music?

I am aware of several AI songs that are popular on Spotify, although in this case, the lyrics are written by a person and only the music is AI., It clearly says in the description that they are AI and no one cares.

Doom, how did you determined that no one cares?

I’ve just read comments on completely AI generated bands like Breaking Rust and Velvet Sundown… and there are numerous comments of people saying this stuff is garbage and that people shouldn’t support it.

I remember several years ago reading that in the 1990's they computer analyzed hit music to determine what makes a song popular, and then reproducing that kind of sound. I thought, that's when I stopped listening to popular music because it almost all sounded alike. AI isn't doing anything new in that regard.

Something that is new is that, to take for example, Breaking Rust is listed a "Verified Artist" on Spotify. But the singer is not a real person and the lyrics are generated off of prompts.

This isn't using some computer program to fill in gaps or enhance a song's quality in some regard... but having a program generate both the lyrics, the instrumentals, and the individual apparently singing the song. But it's murky on that because the creator of this ruse is Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor... and as of yet no one's been able to successfully contact him for an interview. Watch him turn out to be an AI creation as well.

The music and the lyrics were computer generated. The artists were real. Their music...not so much.

Back to the point: people do care as can be gleaned from the comments.
There's no shortage of videos online of people in that industry (and outside of the industry) calling this out.

There's something intimate in finding a song that you like. The artist, for a moment, found the key that unlocked something in the listener.

To just feed a program inputs: "alt-rock song", "sad melody", "hopeful lyrics that rhyme", "deep soulful male voice". and voila... that's warped.

As I said, the songs I am referring to have lyrics written by a human person, but set to music created by AI, and these are good songs.

Let me give you one example, it is a Christian apologetics song called "Without Lies, Islam Dies", the lyrics were written by a Christian apologist named Than but if I didn't tell you the music was AI, you would never know:

The friend I was mentioning has been working on some music using AI.

He has made his own music previously. He supplied his own vocals and using a very nice keyboard to provide the synthesize instrumentals. But he was still playing the keys.

He sent me a new song of his and it sounded good. But, it wasn't his voice (though he did write the lyrics) and there was a female backup singer (which was purely computer generated) and he didn't craft the instrumentals, he entered a variety of prompts into some AI program where he was able to enter things like "melancholic yet hopeful". He could specify what types of instruments are playing. But from what he explained he just explained the type of mood the instrumentals were to convey and if they should speed up or slow down at certain points.

He was very proud of the work he did... but for me it's just not the real thing.

I haven't the heart to say it to him. It would be no different if he was a landscape painter and then found some program where he could just dictate to the program what he wanted it to do, and it would do it for him. "Have the sun reflect a deeper red on the mountains... make the river more serpentine."
