It has been at least a couple of decades since a mouse pad was needed. In the past, you needed a mouse pad because the mouse had a trackball, which would get dirty, and you would have to remove it to clean it occasionally. But now the mouse is optical, with no moving parts you don't need a mouse pad, and most of them now work with Bluetooth so you don't even need to connect them to the computer with a cable (which is good because most modern computers no longer even have a port to plug a mouse into). Some mice have batteries inside that need to be replaced, but increasignly, they have no batteries, you just plug them in to charge them when the power runs low.

I just think it is funny.

It depends on the surface. Some optical mice don't work well, depending on reflectivity of the surface and other things I haven't figured out yet. Sometimes also the surface can be hard to move a mouse on, and a mouse pad can help that too.

I clean my optical mouse also. Don't need to, but it gets dirty.
