Prayers for my Wife

She discovered a lump on her breast yesterday. She scheduled an appointment for Wednesday morning. Her name is Alicia.

Please pray for her.

We have 2 children (13 and 8). Please keep them in your prayers too.

My wife is WELS Lutheran, though she allowed the kids to be baptized Catholic and regularly attends Mass with us.

Just today I suggested that she try a petitionary prayer to the Virgin Mary. Mentioning Mary’s special closeness to Christ and how even her petition to Our Lord led to the first miracle at the wedding feast.

Today I worked from home. I have a schedule that my kids follow. One of the hour segments is dedicated to arts and crafts. Anything they want to do… draw pictures, make a diorama, find a pinecone and learn how to plant a pinecone seed to grow a tree…. Anything. Completely up to them.

My daughter Lucy came up to me and showed me her drawing, it was of the Virgin Mary. She knows nothing about what’s going on with her mom, nor has been privy to our conversation about Mary (which was via text message… as my wife is at work).

She’s never drawn a picture of the Virgin Mary previously…. At least no to my knowledge.

If nothing else, it was very comforting to see.

The initial appointment was a bit disappointing but with some hope.

When she scheduled the appointment she was told that they would do a mammogram. The doctor was a younger gal who seemed a bit flustered in general. She told my wife that the mammogram still needed to be scheduled with a follow up appointment (end of July).

The good news - the lump felt mobile'ish. The disconcerting - it felt firm'ish.

The waiting is so hard! Will continue to pray.

One of the hardest nights in my life was the evening 2 days before the appointment.

My wife never complains (hell, she married me). Since we first met in 1999 she was an exemplar of patience. In all of our years together I only heard her express her annoyance with 2 people..... 2.

On one of our first dates, young kids that we were, we were all sitting around on someone's porch when one of the other girls in this group started to say some cruel things about another girl that was not present. My wife, girlfriend at the time, said, "**so'and'so** isn't here to defend themselves, so we probably shouldn't talk about her."

I had never seen someone do that in a group before. You could have heard a pin drop.

Even when she was pregnant she never missed a day of work. She would vomit morning, noon, and night... never missed work and never complained about it.

So those 2 days before the appointment - we had fallen asleep around 10pm. I found myself awake around 11:46pm and was alone in the bedroom. The bathroom was dark as well. I walked around the house and headed towards the living room where I could hear very soft sobs. She said she couldn't sleep, she said she was too hot. I prayed with her. Told her I would stay up all night reading to her to help her sleep. Told her to let me stay awake and her try to sleep against me.... I couldn't do anything in that moment. I would have crawled myself to hell and back to give her peace.

Thankfully the nights have not been like that one.

The appointment went well and though they stated that all would be known on Friday, that wasn't the case.

They are pretty certain that they are only cysts, which is good. The doctor's concern that it's cancer has diminished greatly... though there's calcification on one of the cysts (concepts all new to me). Apparently this calcification is completely normal and benign in the majority of instances, there remains roughly 15% of the time when it is still potentially cancerous.

There's going to be a biopsy and then we should know for certain.

But, so far we've been blessed with good news.
