Can anyone explain why this is only available in cheap, flimsy paperback editions? The sole exception is if you want a Large Print edition because you are nearly blind, then you can get a regular bound edition. Otherwise, your only option is a cheap, flimsy paperback edition that is good for absolutely nothing.
The cynic or the fundamentalist would say that the Catholic Church, having been forced against its will to issue a Bible, has decided to only make it available in the most worthless, useless editions that no one who loves books would ever buy, and thereby discourage anyone from reading it.

This rant was occasioned by the fact that I just noticed that although I own multiple copies, they are all cheap, flimsy, utterly worthless paperback editions that could not possibly hold up without falling apart for more than a couple of months if I ever actually tried to use it, so I want something more substantial and I found that my only that my only options are another cheap paperback or the Large Print edition, and I do not want either.

Considering that the footnotes are still fossilized monuments of the historical-critical era, most Protestants wouldn't care anyhow.

Another possibility is that the publisher associates nicely bound Bibles with ones that are going to be cherished for a good while, but everyone has the impression that the translation is under such repeated revisions, so who will be cherishing
any edition until they stop revising?

It is currently undergoing full revision of both the Old and New Testaments and the notes. But it isn't revised all that often.
1970-first edition
1986-Revised New Testament
1991-Revised Psalms
2011-Revised New Testament
????-Complete Revision
Revision once every 20 years is not frequent

Right. The ones who would claim that we don't care about the Bible are also mostly ones who wouldn't like the footnotes.

This is the one that I still have. It's leatherette...although falling apart, and missing the last few pages of Revelation. Don't know where they went. Maybe they were raptured

The footnotes are among the things under revision, and hopefully, they will loosen the rules so that other footnotes can be published with them instead of having two sets of footnotes.

And here, we are
to find an affordable large-print Catholic Bible for our little shop. There are affordable large print copies of the Catholic "Good News" translations, but, I kiboshed those.

People who complain about “liberalism” in the NAB really should dislike the Good News Bible because the “translator” behind it denied both the deity of Christ and the Virgin Birth among other doctrines. That is why it dropped from being a best seller in the 70s to an also ran “are they still printing that?”
