Evelyn Waugh said of PG Wodehouse:
Mr. Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in.
Wodehouse's writings are the balm for a weary soul. I've read quite a few from him. It's hard to quote him because you don't know where to start.

But from "Jeeves in the Morning" ("Joy in the Morning")....

But though all Nature smiled, there was, as I have indicated, no disposition on the part of Bertram to follow its example. I got no kick from the shining sun, no uplift from the azure firmament, as it is sometimes called: while as for the twittering birds their heartiness in the circumstances seemed overdone and in dubious taste. When you’re faced with the sort of ordeal I was faced with, there is but little satisfaction to be derived from the thought that you’ve got a nice day for it.

Kirsten frequently quotes those books on Facebook and all the quotes sound hilarious. I've been meaning to try to read one of those, but then again, I've been meaning to read about 876,876,866,765 other books. Life is too short to read everything you should.

The issue isn't accessibility the issue is time

I'm betting I asked this already in the previous version of the message board, but I'll ask anyway: Which of the Jeeves books should I start with? Or, if I read only one, which book should it be?

"Very Good, Jeeves" - is a collection of short stories and has some of the funniest things I have ever read. Specifically "Jeeves and the Song of Songs" which includes performances of the song "Sonny Boy" by Al Jolson.

"Jeeves in the Morning/ Joy in the Morning" is a full story.

"Heart of a Goof" is not in the Jeevers/Wooster world - but from my vantage one of the funnier collections he's written.

From "Jeeves in the Morning".....

Bertie is supposed to be at a costume party to ensure that he can put in a good word for his friend, Boko, who intends to marry a girl named "Nobby". But Boko first has to get in good with Uncle Percy, who Nobby is the charge of. It's imperative that Bertie be at the party at the right time or numerous bad designs will fall on him and his friends.

But his whimsical attitude when his car breaks down while on his way to the party:
Well, of course, it being so essential for me to get to the scene of operations in good time, you might have known what would happen. At about the half-way mark, the old two-seater suddenly faded out, coming to a placid standstill in prettily wooded country miles from anywhere. And as I don’t know the first thing about fixing a car, my talents being limited to twisting the wheel and tooting the tooter, I had to wait there till the United States Marines arrived.

These took the shape – at about a quarter to twelve – of a kindly bird in a lorry who, on being hailed, put everything right with a careless twiddle of the fingers so rapidly that he had occasion to spit only twice from start to finish. I thanked him, flung him a purse of gold and proceeded on my way, fetching up at journey’s end just as the local clocks were striking midnight.

Very Good, Jeeves is available through the Houston library. I should be able to pick it up on Monday. Thanks for the recommendation.

My pleasure.

You'll have to post what your thoughts are of it.

Looking forward to it.
