Top Ten bands

Post by gherkin »

The arrival of the secular new year always prompts some deep thinking, doesn't it? So naturally I've been trying to figure out my favorite 10 bands/performers. I can't do it. I feel like we had this discussion at least once on the old board, but since it's gone we might as well have it again.

1. Obviously. (That means the Beatles, duh.)

2. Eric Clapton (incl. Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos--I don't care if you think that's cheating. It's my topic.)

3-7, tied:
Ozzy Osbourne, with special emphasis on the first 6 Black Sabbath records. Solo stuff = OK, but Sabbath = awesome.
Johnny Cash
Metallica
Guns n Roses
Pink Floyd

8-10: I have no idea. Some contenders are Blues Traveler, the Pogues, Rush, Anthrax, Creedence, Alison Krauss, Bill Monroe, the Grateful Dead, Louis Armstrong. Probly more. Can't pick 3. It's too painful.

I might start a thread on top ten albums, too, but that one I have even less grip on. Give your list, or else just ignore the thread and watch it slowly sink off the front page. :fyi:

1 and 2 are dead nuts as far as I'm concerned. BUT... back in the day I always went for the blues rock influence by Clapton and Cream and all future endeavors, however my best friend countered with The Jimmy Hendrix Experience band and I really couldn't disagree or blame him for the choice.

My personal favorite band was a late 60's early 70's English group named Humble Pie.

The original line-up featured lead singer and guitarist Steve Marriott from Small Faces, singer and guitarist Peter Frampton from the Herd, former Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and a 17-year-old drummer, Jerry Shirley, from the Apostolic Intervention.

Rock On was perhaps their most famous LP but they had half a dozen more before they broke up...

Since this all too subjective a topic, as it should be, I'll defer to whomever for the last 7 I would include:

The original Allman Brothers Band
Pink Floyd
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Queen
Pantera
Jethro Tull ... just to name a few ... There are and have been so many good ones in my past.

I have heard of them and probably would recognize some of their songs, but I don't know anything offhand by them. Also never knew this is where Frampton came from!

Nice. I'm a Zeppelin hater and for some reason I never really listened to the Who, though of course I know several of their more famous songs. I got to see Pantera once, opening for Skid Row (don't ask!), and they surely put on an energetic show.

Oh yeah, I get this. Both my sisters loved The Rolling Stones .. I couldn't stand for that, :nono: even though I must admit their universal popularity and literally dozens of #1 hits for 50 years! Longevity alone should have them on the list... just not mine :salut:

Looking at my purchases on iTunes,
1) Moody Blues are at the top of the list followed by
2) The Bee Gees

After that, there are a few that have a handful of tunes:
3) Rod Stewart
4 - 5) A tie: Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones
6 - 9) A 4-way tie: Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, and Stevie Wonder

There is an 8-way tie for the #10 spot:
Billy Preston
Cat Stevens
John Denver
Loggins & Messina
Phil Collins
Tina Turner
Tommy James & The Shondells

PS. I also have a list of religious songs. The artist with the most songs looks to be Joe Wise with 4 (I'm a child of the 60's).

For some reason, I remember that you're a Moody Blues person. Another band I really don't know at all.

Don't know that name. I'll check him out.

I love the Beach Boys, but on a song-by-song basis. Like, I don't love Pet Sounds as a whole.

There are a lot of good bands listed in this thread....the only one missing (to me anyway) is my absolute favorite.....Rush.

I am also partial to Steely Dan....but I don't think they qualify as a "band".

Difficult to find a "typical" song from Vulfpeck. The first indy band to sell out Madison Square Garden (that concert is on YouTube)

https://youtu.be/yG96RttfZtM?si=x2nQAQXCHgE_F_x7

Rose Ensemble did such a range, from Hawaiian Vocal music to American roots, I drive coworkers crazy with the Mexican Baroque Christmas albumn:

Devin Townsend again, he does such a range, this is my all over favorite work

https://youtu.be/1n7uvokARQ4?si=VMsq3To8bdnuJ3Zn

Boygenius

Pop rock, their harmonies and voices just bring me to my knees

Rush is one of my maybe's, but although I was a Rush fan, I was never a Rush fan like Rush fans are Rush fans. Like, I never owned some of their main albums, like 2112.

Steely Dan never did it for me, but they count as a band for our purposes here. I know there are other Steely Dan people around. I think Mrs. Timmy is one.
