Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Great job!
It would have been good for the other (at the time) undefeated team to have been selected for the playoff. Ludicrous that FSU was excluded.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Even with the new playoff system, DI college football still seems like a rigged system designed to favor a small number of 'elite" teams and seems to be something of a joke.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Do you think that it's going to be better or worse when it expands to the 12 team playoff format?

I believe that the canonical form in these cases is "them Wolverines".

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Yes, there's this weird attachment to the SEC, thankfully Alabama got thrashed by Michigan.
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
I don't think the main problem can be fixed, which is a lack of real parity, you have mediocre teams with a really easy schedule who get ranked high because they are "undefeated" and you have strong teams with a tough schedule who are ranked low because they finish 6-5. Unless there is some way to accommodate that fact, it will always be flawed.Gandalf the Grey wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 12:20 pmDo you think that it's going to be better or worse when it expands to the 12 team playoff format?

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
SEC fans always think the SEC is the greatest thing ever and that an SEC team should win the championship every year, and indeed that no team from any other conference should ever even be considered. It's weird and somewhat narcissistic.peregrinator wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 1:49 pmYes, there's this weird attachment to the SEC, thankfully Alabama got thrashed by Michigan.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
I'm counting on all the teams in SEC to do their part and thrash the Longhorns and keep them from ever winning the conference or bowl championship.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
I just don't know what to make of the Big 10 as a conference anymore. It's expanding to so many different teams and regions that it's bordering on becoming its own league.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
One of the arguments I saw for including Alabama in the playoff instead of FSU was that you can't exclude the SEC! Last time I checked there are five "Power Five" conferences so yes, you can have the four other power conference (Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, ACC) winners and exclude the SEC.
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Not a Bama fan here, but it was far from a "thrashing". More like, Bama led for most of the second half and only lost in the last couple of minutes....and nearly tied it up on last three plays.peregrinator wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 1:49 pmYes, there's this weird attachment to the SEC, thankfully Alabama got thrashed by Michigan.
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Not hating on FSU here.....but they lost their starting QB and BARELY beat a sub-par team in the championship game. Odds were very high they would have gotten their tails handed to them the first game of the playoffs.peregrinator wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 10:12 amOne of the arguments I saw for including Alabama in the playoff instead of FSU was that you can't exclude the SEC! Great defense, but offense was terrible without their starting QB....as is the case with most teams.
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Given the SEC's track record since inception of the BCS and later four-team playoffs, they probably have good reason for their swagger.Doom wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 3:19 pmSEC fans always think the SEC is the greatest thing ever and that an SEC team should win the championship every year, and indeed that no team from any other conference should ever even be considered. Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Well, as I said, the playoff system appears to be biased in favor of a small number of elite schools, it is not really a compelling argument that they do well in a system designed to favor them.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
Is the goal of the CFP playoffs to give us good games, or to reward deserving teams? I'd say it's the latter. I'm sure FSU would have lost to Michigan but that's exactly what Alabama did so ....
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
How so?
You go undefeated or lose only one game and beat the other teams that made the playoffs, then I don't see how its designed to favor them.
TCU made the playoffs last year....and got their buttocks handed to them....by an SEC team.
Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
The charter for the selection committee reads, "Proposed Selection Process:peregrinator wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2024 7:11 amIs the goal of the CFP playoffs to give us good games, or to reward deserving teams? Establish a selection committee that will be instructed to place an emphasis on winning conference championships, strength of schedule and head‐to‐head competition when comparing teams with similar records and pedigree (treat final determination like a tie‐breaker; apply specific guidelines).
The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned with the ideals of the commissioners, presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non‐champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non‐champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.
When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable, then the following criteria must be considered:
Championships won
Strength of schedule
Head‐to‐head competition (if it occurred)
Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)"
I didn't see FSU as being one of the four best in the country after they lost their starting QB. And GA crushed them. Granted, they were without other starters who opted out. But I would wager even if GA had those same positions opt out, they still would have crushed them without just their starting QB.
Now don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for them. And if their starting QB was still with them and they got snubbed, then absolutely they should have been there.
But the playoff games were close and well-played....entertaining as heck.
If anything, Meecheeegan had no business being there. They cheated and this undesputeable.

Re: How 'bout those Wolverines?!
You claimed its rigged for a few elite teams. I don't see it that way.
TCU isn't "elite". Washington isn't "elite". Clemson isn't "elite". Auburn isn't "elite". I could go on....
MI, AL, OSU, and a few other schools have winning programs for a reason. It's not because polls and playoffs are rigged for them. They have to win their games just like everyone else.
