Good Friday fast

Post by Seatuck »

When is it over?
I just read that we should continue it until the Easter Vigil.

https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worshi ... surrection.

“If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.”

I have never heard that.Am I reading it wrong?

It is no longer mandatory after Friday. It is suitable, but I suspect not often done at Good Friday levels.

I think this is one of those disconnects left after the Vigil returned to Saturday evening from Saturday morning.

Wasn't the Easter Vigil originally all night long, ending only at dawn,
with the full text of the book of Acts being read along with seven hundred other readings. Even today the “ short” version of the Easter Vigil is between 2 and 3 hours long.
If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

TIL that when Pius XII mangled Holy Week and moved the Easter Vigil to midnight he also extended fast and abstinence to midnight of Holy Saturday (it had been at noon by which time most celebrations of the Vigil had ended).

But Fr. is correct, this no longer applies.

Ok thanks for your perspective. Something to think about. That makes sense. I keep the day as low key and quiet as possible meditating on the silence and “ absence” of Jesus. I’ll keep going with that.
