I'd be fine with Mt 25 not being used at all, just being understood. Since there may not be much discrimination against the Church's own poor in regard to charity, I'm certainly not pushing for what I see in the passage to be weaponized. Mt 25:31-46 isn't all it's made out to be. It could have been left out of scripture, and charity to neighbors near and far would still thrive.

In a related story (Mt 15:21-28) when the Canaanite woman comes to beg Jesus to heal her daughter, Jesus quite abruptly tells her He was sent specifically to the lost sheep of Israel. Jesus seems to have had a time of illumination in that encounter and comes around to giving her what she asked for because of her faith. After that, it seems that Jesus had ‘enlarged the tent’ (Is 54) and goes on a healing spree without distinguishing whether people are Jews or Gentiles.

Last year in a homily (that created a social media drama), Fr Antonio Spadaro SJ paints a picture of that scene as a conversion moment for Jesus for His ministry. He suggests that Jesus might have been ‘blinded by nationalism and theological rigour’ /cultural elements of that time. I won’t cut and past that homily but you can read Edward Pentin's interpretation (and critique) of it here.

Now as an attempt to get the last word on this topic, here is my dynamic equivalent translation of Mt25 verses 32 and 40:
32 and all the Gentiles will be assembled before him. And he will separate them from each other, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
40 And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these disciples of mine, even the least important, you did for me.'
Yes, I am an unusually Biblical Catholic, but I make Protestants uncomfortable too.
