Any significant astronomical event usually means it will be cloudy.

Yes our town is experiencing cloud and I can't be bothered going with the lights chasers to look for clear skies.

I saw the northern version last night. We have a chance again tonight, so I will go look.

There's a lot of very interesting info and footage on the internet explaining the genesis of the aurora's we are seeing. This timelapse footage of coronal holes on the sun is an amazing example.
