Another Augustine quote ?

Post by anawim »

"In my deepest wound I saw your glory and it astounded me". On one page it said that it was from Confessions, but no book, chapter, etc.

I did a search, including quotationinvestigator, and nothing came up? Usual false attribution?

I kind of feel sorry for Augustine. He's probably doing facepalms all the time...I said what?!

I see some internet sleuths speculating that because another version of the quote is "In my deepest wound I saw your glory, and it dazzled me" that it might come from Confessions X Ch.. 41 which says...

"For with a wounded heart have I seen Your brightness, and being beaten back I exclaimed, Who can attain unto it?"

I have not been able to find it before 1987, which is not a good sign.

Perhaps the difference could be chalked up to choice in wording by the translator?
Thank you for your patience as I build the board. I have about 1/16 to go.

That's what I was thinking. I don't know when, (or who) Augustine's "Confessions" was translated into English.
