Hymn for Holy Communion Wedding Mass

Post by Stella »

Is it ok to have Ave Maria for the Communion Hymn? I've been googling the question but haven't found an official approval. Does anyone have a clue?

I am a liturgy coordinator for an Australian Parish and our Office for Worship recommends we do not have a Marian Hymn at Weddings.
Their view is that there should be a communion hymn such as Bread of Heave, Panis Angelicus, Jesus My Lord My God My All.

Having said that I have been to plenty of weddings where there is a Marian Hymn and Priests do not have any input anyway.

I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I don't think there are any rules about which hymns are appropriate for each part of the Mass that would seem to be difficult to regulate.
If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

We will ultimately go with what the Priest yays or nays and thankyou for giving your perspective as a liturgy coordinator. At this stage we are choosing all our hymns and readings to eventually run by Fr. It's just a personal taste thing but I find the music of Bread of Life and Panis Angelicus to be a bit dismal.

Good to know, Fr. Our singer is a female soloist with an angelic voice and my thought is that the Ave Maria will stir some souls at the time of Holy Communion!

Not at all or just not during Holy Communion?

If it's the former I don't get it.

Not at Holy Communion. OK for a final hymn. However many of our priests are OK with a Marian Hymn at any part of the Mass (Nuptial or Ordinary Mass).

Is there not a part of the Nuptial Mass in Australia to give flowers to Our Lady? That's where we had a Marian hymn at our wedding ceremony (in the new rite to be clear).

That is a stupid rule

I would prefer something else at Communion, but I wouldn't forbid it.

Thankyou all for your kindness. :cloud9: And yes Doom and Peregrinator, Ashley was almost exclusively a male name 60 years ago. :-D

Ashley was originally a surname. It became a first name for boys in 17th. c. England, after Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper became known as Lord Ashley. It was used for girls in Ireland, but with the spelling Ashleigh. It really became popular in the US about 50 - 60 years ago.
