I read a couple of his books when I was in college. Don't know that I was ever aware of the fact that they killed him one month before the end of the war in Europe. Apparently, the nazis knew the allies were coming and killed a bunch of prisoners before they could be liberated.

By that point the top Nazis knew the war was lost, even if Hitler himself continued to act like he didn't. So they were settling scores while they could.
Re: Speaking of trailers: Bonhoeffer
I am really looking forward to watching this movie. I hope it will be good.

Re: Speaking of trailers: Bonhoeffer
Settling scores? He was ordering them to their deaths for no purpose; they wanted the war to be over. The plan after the assassination was to pull off a coup to replace the Nazi leadership and then ask the Allies for terms of surrender. The German high command never liked Hitler or had respect for his command abilities.Obi-Wan Kenobi wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 5:02 pm By that point the top Nazis knew the war was lost, even if Hitler himself continued to act like he didn't. If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

This is one that I will watch after it comes to streaming, it takes something EXTRA to get me out to a theatre anymore. Most often I go to a theatre for Met Live in HD Operas.
Trophy Dwarf, remember??

Watched the movie. Pretty good except for the ridiculous "Christianity is not a religion" nonsense he spouted. I didn't think that ridiculous falsehood was around in the 1940s.

Re: Speaking of trailers: Bonhoeffer
If I understood Bonhoeffer correctly, it was a kind of hypothetical question: 'IF Christianity is not a religion...' He was railing against the hypocritical position of those who claim to be Christian, but still live like the secular world around them.
So, it sounds like they distorted what he was trying to say.

I saw the movie tonight. I thought the story was good and the movie well done. I've only read a few quotes from him so not sure how accurately the movie presented his life. Hopefully well. He was protestant so I didn't expect the movie to make him Catholic.
I obviously didn't live during world war 2 so I have no idea how cowardly or courageous I might have been. I'd like to imagine courage but that's easy 80 years removed. But there was a LOT of cowardice then (and often by misguided people who probably thought they were acting courageously). From the moving account, he was certainly full of courage.

what 'nasty right-wing slant'?MattTheCricketBat wrote: ↑Fri Dec 20, 2024 5:58 am Bonhoeffer was an amazing historical figure, but from what I've heard of this film it gives a nasty right-wing slant that Bonhoeffer wouldn't have approved of.
