it was not a requirement when we went... back in the early 80s.... i think that has changed now but i wouldn't swear to it... just pretty sure it has

i think we just had to produce a birth certificate, but i would need to check with my wife on that

Yes, it has changed now. You need at minimum a Passport Card to enter Mexico or Canada. I remember way back in 2000 I was at a conference in San Diego, some of the folks decided to go down to Tiajuana one evening. They were not packing birth certificates in their conference overnight bags, it was just a wave-through.

I think you need a passport to cross the southern border now, or at least a passport card (assuming you're driving).

Yes, it has changed now. You need at minimum a Passport Card to enter Mexico or Canada.

If you're flying you need a passport. Driving (or taking the train) you can use a passport card. And if you're on a cruise going from a U.S. port to a U.S. port, you just need ID (but I would carry a passport just to be safe).
