Re: Top Ten bands
I just realized...I no longer know how to utilize quotes properly.
Re: Top Ten bands
U2 and Rush are the top two. Not sure of the order but probably leaning towards Rush.
The next 8 slide in and out from the list of 20 or more depending on the day, season, situation. Some are...
REM
Indigo Girls
Fleetwood Mac
Led Zepplin
Guns and Roses
Coldplay
The Cure
Ed Sheeran
The Rembrandts
Heart
Lately, a new band I've enjoyed is Judah and the Lion.
The Beatles and Metallica should not be on any top x list....

Re: Top Ten bands
Dang, that's a pretty good list! I wouldn't have U2...they're good, but not in my Top 10. Nor would I have Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, G&R, or The Rembrandts. I'd move The Cure up to my Top 2, and include Steely Dan, The B-52s, Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Earth, Wind, and Fire.Tired wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 10:24 pm U2 and Rush are the top two. Re: Top Ten bands
Guilty as charged. I just posted my list and studiously avoided solo artists (the OP does, as you recall, say "band"). But I think duos count.gherkin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 3:05 pmRush is one of my maybe's, but although I was a Rush fan, I was never a Rush fan like Rush fans are Rush fans. Like, I never owned some of their main albums, like 2112.Deacon Arky wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 2:13 pm There are a lot of good bands listed in this thread....the only one missing (to me anyway) is my absolute favorite.....Rush.
I am also partial to Steely Dan....but I don't think they qualify as a "band".
Steely Dan never did it for me, but they count as a band for our purposes here. I know there are other Steely Dan people around. I think Mrs. Timmy is one.

Re: Top Ten bands
Figuring my top ten would require too much time from me at the moment. But my favorite band for decades has been Jethro Tull. The configurations of musicians surrounding the only remaining founder, Ian Anderson, since the big breakup in 2011, when Martin Lancelot Barre, the guitarist since 30 December 1968, and Doane Perry, drummer since 1984, were jettisoned, doesn't seem to me to be Jethro Tull. Anderson long ago said that if Martin were for some reason no longer performing in the band that he, Anderson, would not want to perform under the name Jethro Tull. Well, something changed since Anderson publishes music and tours as Jethro Tull without Martin Barre. Anderson's voice is shot and has been for many years, since the mid-1980s even. You think he would want to retain as much of the sound from the golden age as possible. Anyway, at its peak, for me, though I'm not a musician and hardly learned in music, Tull was a great band and Ian was the greatest entertainer I've ever seen. But his was a very physical act. Some of the songs and a few of Anderson's stage antics were quite ribald. I saw Tull at the Universal Amphitheatre in Hollywood, California, in 1984 and Ian threatened to stop the show if a few folks in front didn't extinguish their "bloody maryjuana."

Re: Top Ten bands
Obviously, indeed.
I had overlooked this entire thread until today, and your mention of Alison Krauss. I was always a late bloomer, and the same goes for my affinity for bluegrass music. Thankfully, I came around, and discovered this girl with the golden fiddle.

Re: Top Ten bands
Criteria -
1) strictly bands and not individuals or individuals that led a band like Jimi Hendrix or Tom Petty.
2) overall body of work, total album sales, the # of songs that charted off those albums or the album itself achieved Gold+ status. This eliminates bands who had one stellar album and lived off that success...and mind you, some of these bands below I don't like.
3) Having a bummer album or two doesn't disqualify. Nor does an "evolution" from early version of the band that released crap, but then "figured it out" and became huge disqualify them from the list.
4) Genre needs to be at least considered at a minimum, "Rock n' Roll", even if some of their stuff is more "pop."
5) "Best of" are not counted as part of their body of work.
1) Beatles (not a fan, but do like some of their stuff)
2) Led Zeppelin (should be #1, but folks would endlessly debate)
3) Queen
4) Pink Floyd
5) Eagles
6) Rolling Stones (I would add they are arguably the most overrated band ever)
7) AC/DC
7) U2
8) Black Sabbath
10) Fleetwood Mac
Didn't make the list, but still strong album sales and several charting singles - Van Halen, CCR, REM, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Guns N' Roses, Rush, Styx, Metallica, Aerosmith
