But only in the exact same sense that the entire Rosary is optional, they are not uniquely optional compared to the other mysteries.

Sure they are. Last I knew, they weren't required for membership in the Rosary Confraternity.

Yet they are so universally common in public recitations, such as on Catholic radio, that to try to avoid them due to the things I find problematic about them, becomes self-isolating.

So, may I now express how crazy the title of this thread makes me? (As well as the "title" of the mysteries).
"Luminous Mysteries of Light" is akin to saying "ATM Machine" (Automatic Teller Machine Machine).
Rant over.

Exactly, if you go to church when a rosary is being said on Thursday it's typically the Luminous Mysteries. And then on Saturday you have the Joyful instead of the Glorious. And then on Sunday you always have the Glorious.
I remember some years ago when Baronius Press was seeking the imprimatur for their handmissal they were made to include the Luminous Mysteries as a condition of that imprimatur. That doesn't exactly smack of "optional".

My family prays the luminous mysteries. I was raised this way.
I can see how it helps to mediate on the public life of Jesus, his teachings and miracles.
I also understand how the symbolism of 150, corresponding to the Psalms, is helpful.
I don't care what set of mysteries another person uses. They are praying, and that is enough.
