Favorite movies

Post by gherkin »

I just had to answer a security question on some website. I got the answer wrong. I don't know what the right answer is, actually. The question was "what's your favorite movie?" Evidently I put something in there that I couldn't come up with. Anyway, it raised the issue for me. Might as well put some here.

What I answered to the question was what I thought I'd have said:

1. On The Waterfront.

After that, I get muddy on order, but it would include:

The Manchurian Candidate (the original, obviously)
Crimes and Misdemeanors
It's a Wonderful Life
Beauty and the Beast
Mary Poppins
The Wizard of Oz
Brideshead Revisited (the original BBC show, which is sort of a cheat, but I think of it as a very long movie instead of a TV series)
Bleak House (2005 BBC series--same point as above)
Star Wars
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Rio Bravo
True Grit (the original, and also the remake)
Maybe Vertigo?

I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones. I can't think which one I'd have put at #1 for the security question, though.

You didn't include The Princess Bride? That surprises me given how often you quote it.

Inconceivable!

I might have forgotten it. On the other hand, I'm not sure it's really one of my very favorite movies. It's got some great lines in it. But is it a great movie? Probably. Maybe it goes on the list.

I remember seeing the first one, but don't remember really loving it. Always nice to hear Cliffy, though.

I haven't seen that. My kids are big Bing Crosby fans, and Holiday Inn is one of their favorite movies, but they hate White Christmas.

Difficult for me to come up with a list, I will likely come back to edit it.
  • The 10 Commandments
    The King And I
    Sound Of Music
    Blazing Saddles
    Godfather
Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead
    Drop Dead Fred
    Purple Rain
Rosemary's Baby (the best adaptation of a novel to screen)
    African Queen
That other one with John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn
    The Others
    Recent: Society Of The Snow
The Devil's Advocate
The Steve Martin version of Father Of The Bride
Elf
And I know it is girly and shallow, but, I will watch "The Devil Wears Prada" when I need an escape

Toy Story 1 & 2.
Toy Story 3 is better than either of them. From
Lotso Love (probably as far as I know Ned Beatty’s final performance) being one of the creepiest and scariest villains in the history of cinema, to the genuinely terrifying scene where the toys are headed to apparent oblivion in the fire and they all hold hands, one of the scariest scenes in the history of cinema, a scene that had the entire theater crying including kids who were screaming in terror. Toy Story 3 is not only the best Toy Story movie but the best animated movie and one of the best movies of any genre ever made. That is wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, being relegated to the ghetto of “Best Animated Movie” is a tragedy.

It is good if you like screwball comedy, but for whatever reason, moral depravity most likely, screwball comedies aren’t very popular with modern people.

I'm generally not a screwball comedy kind of person (not a fan of the 3 stooges for example) but I love that movie.

I wouldn’t consider The Three Stooges screwball. That’s just slapstick. Screwball is a kind of comedy which is a parody of a romance where the female character dominates the male character and usually engages in some wild scheme who is seen as effeminate or weak until he learns to assert himself by discovering her scheme and trying to expose it.

Examples include It Happened One Night, You Can't Take It With You, My Man Godfrey and His Girl Friday

Also screwball is known for rapid-fire dialogue often overlapping, scenes can be difficult to follow because everyone is talking very fast at the same time. It became a kind of competition to make the actors speak as quickly as possible. The Micro Machines guy would have fit in perfectly.

Oh, yeah, I liked the Incredibles. Surprisingly good movie. Still not in my faves. Best animated movie is obviously Beauty and the Beast. :fyi:
