After shocking assassination attempt...
After shocking assassination attempt...
... this is what Catholics need now
Our Sunday Visitor identifies the destructive nature of the ideological divide in the US.
"This destruction has resulted in the elevation of politics to the role previously occupied by Christianity in general, and the Catholic Church in particular, in the Western world, and nowhere more fully than here in the United States. Rather than approaching the world of politics as Catholics, in full possession of the truth, we approach the Church as members of this or that party, adherents of this or that conservative or liberal ideology, looking for confirmation of our preconceived notions in the truths that the Catholic Church teaches. We spend more time having our ideological preconceptions reinforced by FOX News or MSNBC, or the talking points of the Democratic or Republican parties, than we do in liturgical worship and the study of Scripture and the Fathers of the Church and Eucharistic adoration and even prayer."
"... Now more than ever, we need to stand up for the fullness of the truth, to resist the temptation to join in the ideological chorus of left or right that can only divide and never unite. As adoptive sons and daughters of God the Father, we have been given a great gift, but the only way we can keep that gift is by sharing it with the world, living the truth in love, healing the wounds of our political divide, and boldly proclaiming that unity and peace will never be found in political parties or leaders, but only in Jesus Christ."

Re: After shocking assassination attempt...
It does seem true just following US Catholicism on the internet, that many people identify first by politics and only second as Catholics.

While true, in this case, it doesn't even begin to consider the possibility of either mental illness, or just plain evil. Yes, there is a political divide, but the assasin may have been 'one taco short of a combination plate'.
Re: After shocking assassination attempt...
The only thing "shocking" about the assassination attempt is that it took so long for it to happen. I thought there would be at least one attempt in 2016 before the election.
The Democrats have been saying that Trump is Hitler, that he is a unique "existential threat" to the survival of the country, that he is a traitor, that he desires to commit genocide and put his political opponents in concentration camps, and on and on since 2015.
If someone really believed all that (and most people who say It clearly do not, they only say it because they think it will help them win), why WOULDN'T you try to kill such a person? This kind of rhetoric is inherently inflammatory and tends to provoke violence.
The scenario "assassinate Hitler before he takes power" is a cliche of time travel fiction and moral speculation, if you truly believed Trump is Hitler, why not act? I'm only surprised it took this long.
Every Republican presidential candidate of my lifetime has been compared to Hitler. For a certain segment of the extreme left, calling the people you disagree with Hitler is the floor, not the ceiling, it is the starting point of the conversation, not the ending.
"Person X that I don't like is Hitler" is a kind of rhetoric that seems to be at least a little antisemitic because it denies that Hitler represented a unique level of evil. If everyone is Hitler, then Hitler must not have been that bad.
Hopefully, everyone will now start reassessing what they say and stop using inflammatory "everyone I disagree with is Hitler" rhetoric, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

You think so, Gracie?
Even if it happens temporarily, people have short attention spans. They'll go back to business as usual.
Re: After shocking assassination attempt...
I agree with Doom
This was barely surprising. Many things about it are hinky and I do not think we will ever know what actually was behind it.

Re: After shocking assassination attempt...
It's just become so deeply ingrained culturally, to be nasty sadly. When my kids were in highschool in the 2000's, the Franciscans seriously pushed for being 'counter cultural' and courageous in doing so and I do actually think they absorbed that tactic because they are such nice people. It actually feels good to be nice but nice and kind have just gone out of fashion even in adult Catholics who really should know better.
