Recently, National Cathedral's lady Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde, excoriated, albeit in cleverly phrased language, the President and others. I wonder ... what did anyone in the Administration expect from an Episcopalian priestess?
I departed the Episcopal Church because, in part, it had become a poor secular imitation of a Christian body. Woke had overwhelmed it, with Christian fidelity off the radar scope. Budde is now a heroine to what a friend termed the "priest shaped objects" comprising nearly all of the Episcopal clergy. She seems to be quite the heroine to herself.
I'm not saying that the President might not have received similar treatment from a Catholic pulpit; but I hope that the words coming from many priests would have been conciliatory and aimed at unity and a call to holiness. His treatment was near guaranteed from an Episcopalian.
Vance and Melania are both Catholic. And, as Trump is an iconoclast, he might have requested a national prayer service at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I don't know the political and social druthers of the rector and bishop, but I doubt he would have gotten the woke chiding he received at the Episcopal cathedral.

Re: Exactly What Did Trump Expect from an Episcopal Priestess
We have learned what actually happened.
This "bishop" (I would be more respectful if she were a man, as I know the validity of Anglican orders is a confusing issue, 1896 is a long time and they have taken steps to attempt to address Pope Leo's concerns, as far I know at least some Anglican ordinations may be valid) lived in Minneapolis for over 20 years. She was brought to the "National Cathedral" specifically for this event. We even know who brought her: Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, the head of the Congressional Presidential Inauguration Committee responsible for planning all events related to a presidential inauguration. This was an intentional "set up" designed to humiliate the President and Vice President.

If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

Melania can't be too Catholic...she's pro-choice.

Then they deserved it. Did no staffer have even the most rudimentary concept of what the Episcopal church has become? I think that the President et al. assumed that the "clergy" would play fair -- so they deserved it.

Trump has gone to the National Cathedral dozens of times, including the day before, for a service about 2 hours before the inauguration.Highlander wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 6:44 pmThen they deserved it. When I was watching the coverage on Fox News on Monday, I saw hundreds of people, including Trump and Vance walk in. The commentators said, "We are not allowed to show you what is happening inside." (why not I wonder?) so they kept the camera on the church while they talked for an hour about the history of the Church, why it is called "The National Cathedral" and generic interesting facts about presidential history.
This is the "Church of the Presidents' where, allegedly, every president since James Madison has attended official functions during their term in office. This is the same building where, on Friday, September 14, 2001, George W Bush attended a commemoration service for 9-11. This is where presidential funerals are often held, including Jimmy Carter and the funerals of members of Congress such as John McCain, There was no reason for anyone to think that this would be a setup.

Re: Exactly What Did Trump Expect from an Episcopal Priestess
I recall reading a bio of Teddy Roosevelt -- he was a big advocate of the "National" cathedral and it began construction when he was president. As I recall. And it took a long time to complete. So Madison, et al., up to, at least, TR, and beyond, could not have attended anything in it.
HST, we disagree on the setup awareness. Had anybody in the Administration asked any former Episcopalian, who left in search of the Church, what to expect from a priestess bishop ... they would have been forewarned. Had anybody in the Administration researched the luminaries in the Episcopal church and its recent priorities ... they would have been forewarned. I agree that Trump/Vance/wives were ambushed, but they should have known an ambush was coming.
And they should have gone elsewhere. Vance might have said, "Hey, Don. Let's head down the road to a really nice church and have an actual national prayer service."
But I understand your argument. I counter that the times, they have changed.
